This is a card I submitted for publication but sadly was not accepted. I have only submitted a few cards, so I have just barely gotten my feet wet. I struggle with the idea of submitting a bit, because sometimes with challenges or submissions, I feel like I am creating for what other people want and not so much for myself. My style seems so much more understated than a lot of others. But I've realized I really like my style, and I am committed to being a non-foofy stamper and card maker. If I never get published, I'm okay. My friends like what I make for them, and you are all so kind...So there. But it doesn't mean I won't keep trying :).
Nevertheless, I branched out a bit with this card, as I used some 3-D charms/beads that Jenn gave me. I LOVE the beach, and I miss it terribly. When I saw the call for summer cards, my brain said "beach", but I had a difficult time translating that into a meaningful card. I do like how this turned out, though. I roughed the edges with my fingernail a bit, then ran the edge of my white inkpad over them a la Pine. I love this color scheme, too--so soft and cool.

I think I probably inherited the 'foof' you left behind. :) Everyone eventually finds their own unique style and when you stop stamping to please yourself and stamp to please others you've lost the pleasure of it. I like this card, those beads are too cute, they remind me of summers we've spent at the beach and I can smell the salt air. I like the hint of white you gave the CS edges, its very nice.
ReplyDeleteCheryl - I love your cards! And like you, I'm committed to being 'non foofy' (or at least LESS foofy!) so I doubt I'll ever see my cards on the pages of a magazine. But thats OK, as long as the creative process still makes you happy, and you enjoy giving your creations to friends & family, isn't that really what is so rewarding?
ReplyDeleteI think your card is really pretty but not my style preference either. Remember, if you can't stand back and say, "I like this card" then the satisfaction and fun is gone. You have to let the real you shine in your work. We all really like YOUR style!!!
ReplyDeleteAwww, love the fun shells you have across the top! Yeah, I submitted a few tims for submission but I'm really trying to focus on why I started card making in the first place... And sometimes its not you... sometimes they just need cards of a different sentiment, color, etc. But yeah, trying is good. :-)

ReplyDeleteI love these colors together. The seashells are a really neat addition to your card. And I just have to say, that I hope you always have fun making your cards even if you never get published. You've made some great cards and I love to see what you've done!

Cheryl, I feel your pain. I think I've submitted maybe 20 cards so far- no luck. Seems like there are few fresh faces getting published these days. Keep at it- this card is gorgeous!

I really like your card, love the colors and the beach reminder makes me smile...I miss the beach so much too! I completely understand where you are coming from with the whole publishing thing too. I think for me I just have keep the goal of this hobby being for my enjoyment and to bless others with. Keep up the great work, and if you keep submitting you just never know!
